Traditional project management tools often leave creatives feeling like failures. To-do lists grow endlessly, deadlines loom ominously, and our natural creative rhythms get crushed under the weight of “should.” What if there was a system designed specifically for how creativity actually works? Introducing the Progress PulseOver the past 11 weeks, you’ve been tracking your creative patterns, understanding your brain’s networks, and optimizing your environment. Today, we’re introducing a visual mapping system that brings it all together: The Progress Pulse.
Picture a simple board with three columns:
- Brewing: Ideas percolating, not yet ready for serious development
- Building: Projects actively being shaped and formed
- Better: Work being refined and polished for completion
Place each project in one of these columns, along with markers for your energy level:
- Green: High energy—you’re excited and ready to dive in
- Yellow: Medium energy—interested but not urgent
- Red: Low energy—stuck or stalled
You’ll also add symbols to indicate what kind of brain state each project needs:
- 🌊 (Wave): DMN-dominant work like brainstorming or free exploration
- ⚡ (Spark): Executive Function work requiring focused concentration
- 🌀 (Spiral): Hybrid work that combines both mental states
Your Implementation Plan
- Create Your Board: Set up a physical or digital space with the three columns
- Map Your Projects: Place everything you’re working on into the appropriate columns
- Add Energy Markers: Do a quick energy check for each project
- Practice Daily Pulses: Spend 2 minutes morning and evening adjusting your board
- Track Weekly Patterns: Notice which projects move and which stall
- Read Chapter 12 to learn more about creating your progress pulse

This Week’s ChallengeSet up your Progress Pulse board and use it daily for one week. Pay particular attention to how your energy aligns with different types of projects. Looking AheadNext week, we’ll explore how to use your Progress Pulse to make smart decisions about what to work on and when based on your natural energy patterns. Remember: This system isn’t about productivity in the traditional sense—it’s about honoring your creative oscillations while maintaining gentle forward momentum. |
